What to Expect During Your DOT Medical Exam
If you meet DOT health standards, you will receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, which is typically valid for up to 24 months. Some drivers may receive a certificate for a shorter period if a medical condition requires monitoring.
What to Bring to Your DOT Physical
- Valid Driver’s License or Government ID
- List of Medications (including dosage and prescribing doctor)
- Medical History (including past surgeries or chronic conditions)
- Eyeglasses, Contact Lenses, or Hearing Aids (if applicable)
- Specialist Clearance Letters (if you have conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or sleep apnea)
Vision Test
- Minimum 20/40 acuity in each eye (with or without correction)
- Peripheral vision of at least 70 degrees in both eyes
Hearing Test
- Ability to perceive a forced whisper from at least 5 feet away (with or without hearing aids)
Blood Pressure & Pulse Check

Urinalysis
- Used to detect underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes
